Applying for our Internship Programme

If you are interested in becoming a participant in our Internship programme first check that you are eligible for the programme. Once you have verified that you meet all the eligibility criteria send a copy of your CV to internship@gapyearnz.co.uk. We will pass this onto Internship NZ to assess whether they will be able to successfully find you a placement.

If after viewing your CV Internship NZ believe there is a high chance of finding a suitable placement the application procedure can begin.

Application Procedure

The first stage is to find an appropriate Internship. There are currently two options:

Option 1
Apply for a specific internship placement as listed in our vacancies section. Payment of the initial application fee with full documentation as required initiates the placement process. These applications are forwarded by the Internship NZ office to the employer and a response will be received within 4 weeks.

Option 2
Submit a general application to our office for any position in a specified field of employment where Internship NZ has identified a market for interns.

These markets currently include:

- Hospitality
- Tourism

CV’s will be submitted to a number of potential employers in various locations. Placement in these roles may take up to six months.

Please see our fees page for details on the cost of this first stage

Programme Application

Once a participant has accepted an offered Internship position the second stage of the application process can be completed.

Visa Application
With assistance and advice from us participants apply for the NZ Work Permit visa directly to their designated NZ Consulate/Embassy after receiving all the necessary documentation, forms and instructions. This work permit visa is outlined under W3.125 in the New Zealand Immigration Service manual. Participants must apply for this visa from the country of their legal permanent residence.

Visa Conditions
Participants cannot enter New Zealand more than 7 days prior to the start of their internship.
Participants cannot be employed outside of their internship.
Participants may be able to extend their internship with the same employer if both the employer and intern request this, and the terms of the internship have been met (for up to a further 6 months)
Participants can stay in NZ as tourists for an extra 3 months after the end of their internship.

Employment Conditions
The minimum wage is NZ$8.50 per hour. Most interns are paid the equivalent of industry standards for their position. Placements are a minimum of 25 hours per week and in most cases participants will be expected to work 35 – 40 hours per week. This will be detailed in your internship offer.

Participants will organise a personal tax number on arrival in New Zealand and tax will be automatically deducted by the employer. Participants are responsible for organising a tax refund on their departure from New Zealand.

Flights and Insurance
Once a participant has received their Internship Visa they must purchase appropriate flights and insurance. Once this has been completed they must provide evidence of this as per the terms and conditions of the programme

Please see our fees page for details on the cost of the programme fee.

Internship Extension

Participants must apply to Internship NZ office in New Zealand using the appropriate form. Purchasing medical insurance for the period of the extension is a requirement. For more details on appropriate insurance please click here. Fee for extension application is NZ$400.00
